As with most places in Jamaica, there is a story behind how Kuyaba Negril came to be. In 1965, a young Israel Williams used his winnings from his horse None-Such, to purchase a piece of beachfront property in the then sleepy fishing village.
At first, the property was not open to the public and was reserved for family time on Sundays for the Williams family. However, they decided to clear the land and build a few thatched huts on the property to accommodate the curious travellers who had begun to flock to the little town. At this time, the property was called Sea Gem.
Soon enough these accommodations were no longer adequate and as such simple cottages were built instead. After the restaurant was added, the boutique hotel was renamed Kuyaba in honour and recognition of our Taino ancestors.
With 6 types of rooms and suites to choose from at different price points and including different services, there is something to accommodate every vacation and budget.
Airport shuttle services are available to and from the Sangster’s International Airport in Montego Bay for an additional cost.
If you plan on working while on vacation and would prefer a designated workstation, the King Suite or Kuyaba superior rooms would be the best options as they are the only rooms that include a writing desk.
Kuyaba actually is the Arawakan word that means a paradise for feasting, drinking and dancing, and that is exactly what Kuyaba’s Restaurant and Bar provides to its guests. The Kuyaba restaurant serves both traditional Jamaican meals as well as internationally inspired meals.
Here, you can get a steaming plate of curried goat just as easily as you can get your steak done exactly the way you like it. And for dessert, try a slice of their mango cheesecake, I promise it won’t disappoint.
You have the option of dining on the open-air deck, in the dining room, on the gazebo tower, at sunset by the sea or a romantic moonlight dinner experience, the choice is yours.
At Kuyaba, the bar opens at 7 am and closes at 9 pm. And with it being located on the beach, the drinking and dancing part of the meaning can be fully enforced. Enjoy drinks and cocktails made from both local favourites and international brands as well.
