History of Kuyaba Negril

As with most places in Jamaica, there is a story behind how Kuyaba Negril came to be. In 1965, a young Israel Williams used his winnings from his horse None-Such, to purchase a piece of beachfront property in the then sleepy fishing village.

At first, the property was not open to the public and was reserved for family time on Sundays for the Williams family. However, they decided to clear the land and build a few thatched huts on the property to accommodate the curious travellers who had begun to flock to the little town. At this time, the property was called Sea Gem.

Soon enough these accommodations were no longer adequate and as such simple cottages were built instead. After the restaurant was added, the boutique hotel was renamed Kuyaba in honour and recognition of our Taino ancestors.

Accommodations At Kuyaba Negril

With 6 types of rooms and suites to choose from at different price points and including different services, there is something to accommodate every vacation and budget.

  1. KING SUITE - Their most luxurious offering on the property. This room comfortably fits four guests, with the handmade bamboo king size bed and additional pull-out day bed. The private balcony overlooking the lush gardens is the perfect place to connect with nature for a while. This room also includes a Jacuzzi and an oversized spa-style bathroom so you can pamper yourself during your downtime.

  2. KUYABA SUPERIOR - The superior rooms are accompanied by private balconies or verandahs with a hanging hammock you can relax in and enjoy the view of the lush gardens below. This room hosts up to 4 people.

  3. HONEYMOON SUITE - With a king-size bed, private balcony with hammock chairs and a lunch table it is perfect for couples who just wish to unwind and enjoy each other’s company.

  4. THE BAMBOO ROOM - The bamboo room got its name from the bamboo stand of the verandah. This room is somewhat larger than the Superior room so there will be more space for up to four guests to fit comfortably. The verandah just like the others has a hammock where you can enjoy the views of the gardens below.

  5. RUSTIC COTTAGES - The rustic cottages were built with the experienced traveller or someone looking for an inexpensive vacation to Jamaica in mind. Unlike the others, this room does not have a verandah or balcony and has a double and a single bed to accommodate its guests comfortably. What is special about the rustic cottages is that two are attached and can therefore become one dwelling for a group or it can accommodate two separate parties if necessary.

  6. COTTAGE with KITCHEN - This cottage is quite similar to the rustic cottage, the only difference is, that it comes with its own kitchenette outfitted with appliances and utensils for the full use of its guests. There is a shared verandah with an adjoining cottage which makes it perfect for groups of family or friends travelling together. The sitting room can also be converted to an additional bedroom should it be needed.

General Amenities at Kuyaba Negril

  • Maid Service
  • Cable Tv
  • Wi-Fi
  • Refrigerator (not included in the king suite or rustic cottages)
  • In-room safe

Airport shuttle services are available to and from the Sangster’s International Airport in Montego Bay for an additional cost.

If you plan on working while on vacation and would prefer a designated workstation, the King Suite or Kuyaba superior rooms would be the best options as they are the only rooms that include a writing desk.

Restaurant and Bar

Kuyaba actually is the Arawakan word that means a paradise for feasting, drinking and dancing, and that is exactly what Kuyaba’s Restaurant and Bar provides to its guests. The Kuyaba restaurant serves both traditional Jamaican meals as well as internationally inspired meals.

Here, you can get a steaming plate of curried goat just as easily as you can get your steak done exactly the way you like it. And for dessert, try a slice of their mango cheesecake, I promise it won’t disappoint.

You have the option of dining on the open-air deck, in the dining room, on the gazebo tower, at sunset by the sea or a romantic moonlight dinner experience, the choice is yours.

At Kuyaba, the bar opens at 7 am and closes at 9 pm. And with it being located on the beach, the drinking and dancing part of the meaning can be fully enforced. Enjoy drinks and cocktails made from both local favourites and international brands as well.
