The falls are set in a salubrious, tranquil and serene setting, making it an ideal place for relaxation and rejuvenation. It is a perfect spot for people who love nature, swimming, and peacefulness. The entire area is surrounded by dense tropical forests, which create a natural barrier against noise and pollution, providing visitors with an unspoiled and pristine environment.

History of Somerset Falls

Somerset Falls is more than just beautiful scenery and refreshing waters. It is also rich in history, and visitors are encouraged to take a tour that explores the site's historical significance. Somerset Falls passes through a former indigo and spice farm, but the area's current use seems to have nothing to do with its original function.

This land was inhabited by Spanish colonists who lived in Jamaica centuries ago. Many of the aqueducts and structures they constructed during that time have been well-preserved enough to still be visible here more than a century later. Beyond the misty curtain of the falls, a tour guide might lead you to a small, dark, cave-like grotto that is just ready to be investigated.

What to Expect at Somerset Falls

To access the falls, visitors must first go through a series of stairs that lead down to the gorge where the falls are located. This path allows visitors to enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding tropical forests and get a closer look at the waterfalls as they descend towards the bottom. Visitors are then guided by a knowledgeable guide through a winding pathway that leads to the base of the falls.

The Falls
The falls themselves are impressive, with water cascading down from several different levels. The higher falls are more powerful and create a beautiful mist that covers all the immediate surrounding areas. These waterfalls are perfect for adventurous individuals who enjoy cliff jumping and other similar activities. The lower falls, however, are more conducive to swimming and relaxing in the refreshing and cool waters.

Visitors wait on a sturdy platform by the waterfall to join a small boat, adding to the sense of wonder. Passengers will travel alongside olive-green plants that are damp from the continuous flow of freshwater. Beyond the major waterfall, the boat will enter a dark, confined gorge. When you've had enough of the river cascading down the mountainside, Hidden Falls, a 32-foot teardrop cascade, is suddenly exposed. The force of the water, which is thunderous, obstructs hearing and vision while drenching everything and everyone in its course with a refreshing mist. A deep pool is created around the big boulder where the cascade spills onto it.

The Gardens
Visitors also have the opportunity to explore the lush gardens surrounding the falls during their visit. The gardens are home to a wide variety of plant species and offer visitors an opportunity to enjoy a leisurely stroll amidst some of the most beautiful and peaceful scenery in the world. The gardens feature many flowering plants, fruit trees, and exotic palm trees, adding to the ambience of the entire area.

Other Activities
Somerset Falls offers guests the opportunity to participate in various water-related activities like swimming, snorkelling, and kayaking. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own equipment or rent them on-site. There is also a small restaurant located near the falls, where visitors can grab food and drinks while enjoying the stunning views and sounds of the cascading waters.

Additionally, Somerset Falls is an excellent spot for bird watching, and if you are an enthusiast, you will enjoy the vast array of species found in the South Pacific area, including the Black-throated Blue Warbler, the Jamaican Oriole, and the Jamaican Mango.

Cost and Best Time to Visit
The rainy months of June to November are when the seasonal falls are at their finest. The cost for entering somerset falls on a weekday is 15usd while on weekends it is 20usd when other attractions such as a man-made swimming pool and water slides are available.

Overall, Somerset Falls is a mesmerising Jamaican attraction that combines stunning natural beauty with rich history and culture. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or education, you'll find something to enjoy and appreciate at Somerset Falls. With its serene environment, refreshing waters, and breathtaking views, it's truly a must-visit for anyone visiting the island of Jamaica. Start planning your visit by booking with us.
