The epidemic of absentee fathers isn’t new to Jamaica. As Jamaicans, we may even consider this the norm and present, active fathers being the outliers. So Father’s Day is a special occasion where we celebrate and honour the men who have provided love, protection, and guidance in our lives. And what would be a celebration without reggae songs dedicated to them?

Unfortunately, special dedicated songs to fathers are few in the dancehall and reggae genre. It is common to hear the radio disc jockeys struggling to find songs to play and Father’s Day while it’s the complete opposite on Mother’s Day. It alludes that this is because most dancehall artists had no stable father figure in their lives growing up, a sad truth.
However, all is not lost, even though only a few (that I can recall), here are some great reggae tracks to play for that awesome father figure in your life. Whether that’s your biological father, stepfather, mentor, friend etc. They deserve to be celebrated on this special day.
Released in 2014, "Real Father" by Jahmiel is a touching ode to his father, who has been a steadfast presence in his life. Jahmiel sings glowingly about his father's unwavering support from birth, his involvement in his academic life, and the belief he has always shown in him. This song is a testament to the impact that a loving and supportive father can have on their child's life.
Christopher Martin’s "Just Like You" is a heartfelt tribute to his father, whom he compares to great leaders like Barack Obama and Nelson Mandela. Despite their greatness, Martin asserts that only his father could be his true "head of state." The song expresses deep gratitude for his father's constant presence and support, making it a perfect dedication for Father's Day.
Vybz Kartel has recorded numerous songs about the love and respect he has for his mother this one was about his dad and mainly the type of Father he wants to be. In "Good Father," Vybz Kartel reflects on the love and care his father showed him, which he now passes on to his own children. He emphasizes the importance of spending time with children and being present in their lives, regardless of financial means. He also praises fathers who take their responsibilities seriously, offering a powerful message about the value of fatherhood.
Sizzla Kalonji’s "Happy Father’s Day" is a celebration of his own father and fathers everywhere. In this track, Sizzla serenades not only his father but also the forefathers and the Almighty, recognizing everyday fathers as the "foundation of the nation." The song is a beautiful expression of love and respect for fathers who play a pivotal role in their families and communities.
If I were to name a song as the Father’s Day national anthem for Jamaica, this would be it. "Original Daddy" by Konshens, released in 2016, is an ode to fatherhood from the artist's perspective. Konshens describes himself as a "real father" who has never neglected his children. He sings about the joys of fatherhood and the heartbreak of seeing his daughter cry, encouraging fathers to take care of their offspring. The song’s visuals feature some of the music industry’s finest fathers, making it a Father’s Day classic.
Wayne Marshall’s "You Are My Father" is a touching tribute to his father, whom he describes as a "beautiful human being" and the "perfect example" of the man he wants to be. Marshall sings about his father’s comforting presence, love, and protection, highlighting the sacrifices his father made to ensure his happiness. This song is a heartfelt recognition of the profound impact a loving father can have.
In "Dear Dad (The Letter)," Ky-Mani Marley pays tribute to his late father, the legendary Bob Marley. This song is a poignant reflection on the few memories Ky-Mani has of his father and his longing for the presence of his father in his life. It is a powerful dedication to all fathers who have passed away, reminding us of the lasting legacy they leave behind.
These songs not only celebrate fathers but also highlight the important roles they play in the lives of their children. Whether it’s through unwavering support, being a role model, or providing love and protection, these tracks honour the men who have made a significant impact on their families. This Father’s Day, let these reggae songs serve as the soundtrack to your celebration of the fathers who have shaped your life.
Happy Father’s Day to all the amazing Dads out there!
