In 2006 Courtney Hamilton bought a small bar & grill on Parottee road in Black River and transformed it into an adorable hideaway - aptly named Idlers' Rest.
It continued to grow, creating lasting memories for visitors, and to date, has become the most recommended accommodations in Black River, Jamaica - especially for business travelers to that side of the island.
It also receives great reviews by couples for location, relaxation, sleep quality and friendliness of staff.
I particularly loved the clean and rustic landscape; the lazy chairs, the hammocks, the small bird sanctuary, and the entrance which is beautifully decorated by 'old man beard' plants hanging overhead (see below).
I was impressed with the rooms; spacious and clean with all the basic amenities, including Cable TV, Hot & cold water and air conditioning.
Honestly, I was pretty alarmed when they told me that this small hideaway has all of 21 over sized rooms - single double, triple and quad. It really doesn't feel like there is more than 10 rooms.
And the bathrooms/showers, equally clean and spacious.
I quizzed Juliet about what differentiates Idlers' rest from the other Bed and Breakfast. Her response:
"Outside of the seclusion, tranquility and R&R, its the family setting; the personal feel. Because of the small intimate nature of the resort, the attendant assigned to the room does everything for the guest, that includes preparation of the food, cleaning the room and even their laundry" (Note: Laundry attracts an additional cost).
A continental breakfast is included for all stays and there is also the option to upgrade to Jamaican breakfast at an additional cost.
I had the pleasure of touring the property with AnnMarie who has been there from the beginning. You can't help feeling the passion she exudes serving the guests she meets here.
To Send A Quick Note/Question To Idlers' Rest Beach Resort Right Now!
There are really no activities here, yes none, nada!
And that is deliberate!
Outside of the fact that it is a very small property, they never intended to compromise their positioning in the mind of the customer, which is tranquility, peace and relaxation.
For those inclined to get busy, there are still many great options, some within 10 minutes of the hotel . After all you are on the south coast.
Among these include:
And Nightlife?
all provide worthy options.
The newly opened Everglades, an extension of Idlers' rest, is an elegant and spacious conference facility that is unparalleled on Jamaica's south coast.
It is located directly across the road and offers seating capacity of up to 450 persons banquet style, or 1000 theater style!
The facilities caters to:
Visitors to the Everglades are also given special discounts at Idlers' Rest.
Black River is one of the safer cities in Jamaica and that specific area, Parottee, is generally incident free.
And if you are worried about getting hassled, no need to here; it's seclusion removes all that. The guests typically wander on the beach side, perhaps running only into a few local fisherman who might be pulling in their catch.

Upon arrival in Black River, continue down to the bridge at Black River Safari, continue east on the straight road until you see the roundabout with the sign above.
Turn right at the roundabout and continue down the Parotte for about 2-3 minutes. The Idlers' Rest sign will be seen to your right.
(Black River is approximately 1.5 hours from (and south of) Montego Bay's MBJ Airport)
