Noni which is scientifically known as Morinda citrifolia, is a tropical gem with a rich history of traditional use for its remarkable health and beauty benefits. It is native to Southeast Asia but widely grown here in Jamaica and other tropical regions. It has earned quite a reputation as a nutritional powerhouse due to its impressive array of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

Here in Jamaica, it is used for many things, but certainly not eaten as you would a regular fruit. The fruit has a pungent and rancid taste and smell, but despite that, it has some incredible nutritional value.

Ways to Use Jamaican Noni

  • Fresh Consumption: Can you have noni as a fresh fruit? Absolutely, however, the taste is not pleasant, nor the smell, especially when ripe.
  • Noni Juice: Adding the fruit to juices or smoothies may be a great way to mask the taste and smell, while still reaping some of its health benefits. 
  • Topical Applications: Noni oil or juice can be applied directly to the skin and scalp to enjoy its skin and hair benefits. Always perform a patch test to check for allergies or sensitivity.
  • Noni Supplements: Noni supplements, available in capsule or powder form, offer a convenient way to incorporate Noni into your daily routine.
  • Drained: We typically place the fruits in clear plastic bags and hang them up for a few days so they can be drained. The juice that is collected at the bottom of the bag is then used to steam our hair, or sometimes take a tbsp per day for a cleanse.

Noni is a treasure trove of nutrition and health benefits. Its rich blend of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients makes it a valuable addition to your diet.
