How Can a U.S. Citizen with Jamaican Permanent Residency Get a Car Loan Here?

Applying for a car loan in Jamaica

Question from Diane Reising-Wendler, CT, USA:

"I have my permanent residency and a TRN card in Jamaica but am a U.S. citizen. Can I get an auto loan in Jamaica?"

Hi Diane, thanks for reaching out—and great question. The short answer is yes, you can apply for an auto loan in Jamaica, even as a U.S. citizen, once you have your Jamaican permanent residency and your TRN, which you already do. That TRN is key because most banks and lending institutions in Jamaica use it to process loans and other financial services.

Banks like JN Bank, Scotiabank, NCB, and even some credit unions regularly approve car loans for residents with the right documents. You’ll generally need to provide your TRN, valid photo ID (such as your passport), proof of your address here in Jamaica, and depending on the bank, proof of income or other assets to show you can repay the loan.

Once those are in place, the bank will guide you through the process. You’ll need details on the vehicle you plan to purchase, like a sales invoice or quotation, and of course, insurance information. Some banks may require a down payment—often around 10 to 20 percent—while others have different terms, especially for used vehicles or those imported.

The good news is, having your Jamaican residency and TRN puts you in a strong position. Your U.S. citizenship doesn’t hold you back in this case, as long as your paperwork is in order.

If you’d like help connecting with someone at one of the local banks to walk you through it, I can assist with that too. Just let me know!
