Hi Alan, great question! The US dollar and the Jamaican dollar have a unique relationship here on the island. Jamaicans are very familiar with both currencies, especially in areas that cater to visitors—like hotels, resorts, and some larger shops. In fact, many businesses will gladly accept US dollars because they’re seen as stable and strong compared to the Jamaican dollar.
That being said, you’ll almost always get a better deal using Jamaican dollars for everyday purchases—especially at local shops, restaurants, markets, or when taking taxis. Some places will accept US dollars but may give you change in Jamaican dollars, sometimes at a rate that’s not in your favour.
The current exchange rate fluctuates, but to give you an idea, as of now it's roughly around 150 Jamaican dollars to 1 US dollar, though it can vary slightly day to day.
For your trip, I suggest carrying both. Keep some US dollars for emergencies or for use at larger hotels and tourist spots. But once you arrive, it’s smart to exchange a portion of your money into Jamaican dollars for convenience and to avoid overpaying in situations where prices are listed in local currency.
Overall, Jamaicans see the US dollar as valuable and useful, but everyday life runs on Jamaican dollars.
And if you ever need help finding the best exchange rates or trusted places to convert your money, let me know
