They are surely one of, if not the best, tour company in Jamaica, hands down.
I say company, but it is really a small adventure business headed by Carolyn Hopkins-Barrett, ably supported by her 10 experienced drivers/tour guides.
Like My-Island-Jamaica.com, this company is different.
Yes, they may take you to join hundreds others on a trip to say, Dunn's River Falls, for example, just like the large tour bus companies, but they do much more!
Not only are their offerings more personal, they find the most remarkable, and in some cases, unheard of, off-the-beaten track attractions and adventures - whether sea, land, rivers or mountains.
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Carolyn (photo below) at her home recently and was truly amazed by her:
a) knowledge of the island, and
b) love for Jamaica and passion for what she does
At the end, I told her she needs to write a book :-)
Her home, by the way, is in an impressive little all-inclusive, yacht on the sea shore; talk about 'living the life' eeh'.
She and her attendants had just taken down the sail so I caught her cooling down. She hurried to the small refrigerator, took out two cold Red Stripe beers and offered one to me.
First up, Carolyn is not a native Jamaican, but speaking to her, you'd never guess, she knows every 'nook and cranny' of this island - my hats off to her - although I don't wear hat much :-)
But seriously though, she is a walking reference on Jamaica, especially in regards to off the beaten path places and adventures - I sit quietly as she educated me on hidden gems we have here!
Carolyn was born in New York. She first came to the Caribbean (Puerto Rico) in 1966 as a student to scuba dive.
Well, one appeal led to another and before you know it she was living and working in the Caribbean - St. Martin and later Antigua.
But a business conference in 1970 took her to Jamaica. She eventually fell in love with the island and the rest is history.
She eventually got married to a Jamaican, got her citizenship (over 25 years now) settled in, and later started this unique Jamaican tour business.
I quizzed her about her love for Jamaica; First about her most favourite place.
To be honest, I was expecting to hear something about a bar, a beach, etc, but her response was this: "Where the John Crow and Blue Mountains meet!".
And why? "That's where the wild boars meet plus you can hike for hours and see no one in sight!" she exclaimed.
Now this was eye opening to me! I never knew that!
Carolyn plans to simply enjoy what she has accomplished here in Jamaica, keep it going, and go sailing around the world - perhaps in two years when she has the technology to answer her emails from anywhere from her yacht.
Carolyn has not only adopted and adapted, she is now a qualified expert for adventures in Jamaica.
So if you are coming to Jamaica and need something different to do; whether to visit an exotic or private waterfall, river tubing, rafting, exploring caves, historical tours, botanical tours, sailing, cruising, snorkeling, hiking the blue mountains or just hanging out a remote location, do consider Carolyn's Barrett Adventures.
Feel free to to use the form below to contact her. I already told her I'll be sharing my experience with you so she is expecting you :-)
I am positive they (she and her team) will make it worth every penny.
