Blue Hole, Ocho Rios or the Cool Blue Hole is one of the most scenic attractions in this adventurous tourist capital. It is often times confused with a close by Blue Hole in St. Mary, Irie Blue Hole.

The truth is there are several Blue Holes in Jamaica, as a matter of fact, I am almost certain that you will find a Blue Hole in every parish. Most Blue Holes, even those with an official name are usually just referred to as Blue Hole, which sometimes breeds confusion for those looking for a specific one.

A collection of limestone natural pools make up this Blue Hole. These are essentially sinkholes with water inside located in a remote areas with beautiful waterfalls. The water in the "Cool Blue Hole" is so vividly blue that it earned it its nickname. It was due to the adventures of a group of tour guides, seeking thrilling spots for their customers besides the ever-crowded Dunn’s River falls that led to the popularity of the once local secret.

Getting to Cool Blue Hole Ocho Rios

This certainly isn't a place where you just hop in your car and get directions from Google Maps. You probably shouldn't plan on using a taxi to get there either. The attraction is completely off the beaten path and your best option is to book a trip with a tour company. It is located approximately 30 minutes drive outside of the centre of ocho rios.

What is the cost to enter Cool Blue Hole?

Cool Blue Hole is a relatively inexpensive attraction. For adults, the entry fee is 25 USD; for children, just about half the cost at 15 USD. There is also an additional cost of around 5 USD for those who would like a personal locker.

What to do at Cool Blue Hole?

If as a child you enjoyed jumping off things and swinging about, then a visit here will be like connecting with your inner child. Maybe you are just looking to push your boundaries. Either way, you can look forward to a thrilling adventure.

Take advantage of the rope swings and, if you dare, try a cliff jump into one of the nearby natural pools. The swimming hole's water is so chilly and pure that you can almost see all the way to the bottom. You won't need to worry when jumping in using the rope swings or free-falling from the surrounding cliffs because the main natural pool in this location is rather deep. Naturally, safety should always come first, so pay close attention to the directions given to you by your guide. Lifeguards are available for rental for those not so confident about their swimming abilities or who just need additional support.

While on your excursion, you'll have the chance to go trekking in addition to seeing waterfalls and taking a dip in the Blue Hole's renowned healing waters. It only takes approximately ten minutes to hike along the river to reach the Secret Falls, also known as Island Gully Falls, so expert hiking skills are not necessary. The short but gorgeous climb to the waterfall offers plenty of opportunity for cliff jumping if you're feeling particularly daring, as well as many natural bathing ponds and rope swings.

You may not want to spend your entire day at Cool Blue Hole so they also offer you the option of combining your visit with other attractions in and around Ocho Rios for an even more fuller and rich day.

Things to take with you:

1. You want to cherish this visit and having photos to look back on is a great way to do that. So bring along a waterproof phone case so you can take as many pictures as you want. It can also double as a way to keep your cash safe and dry if you choose not to rent a locker.
2. As with any water-based attraction you will need to take along with you fresh towels, water shoes, especially for hiking, swimwear and lifejacket if you don’t plan on renting one.
3. Because of its lush surroundings, you can expect to get in contact with a few bugs, so take your bug spray. And of course, remember your sunscreen.
