Patty Patty Patty, I love me a good hot patty. Fresh from the oven, so hot the meaty centre scalds the roof of your mouth when you try to take a bite. But patty is almost a delicacy now, due to the hike in prices.

Back when I was in primary school, I remember walking home so that I could use my taxi fare to buy a beef patty. At that time a beef patty was only $30. Now a single beef patty is for $250 dollars. Not to mention the cost of cheese, goat and shrimp.
But just like KFC, regardless of how often or how high the price of patty gets, Jamaicans will never stop buying, myself included. Another thing Jamaicans won't stop doing? Debating about which brand patties are the best. There are 4 major patty brands in Jamaica, Juici beef, Tastee, Mother’s and Devon house.
So I am going to break down for you what you can expect from all four brands, and which are the best in my opinion. Emphasis on my opinion.
1. Juici Beef Patties
I am putting Juici Patties as number one for 1 main reason. Their crust and filling to crust ratio is top tier and simply cannot be beaten. The crust of their patty is always crisp and flaky. Yes if you are not a pro at eating patties you will make a mess, but it is absolutely worth it.
The next thing I love about Juici patties is the amount of filling they put in their patties. I have never bought a Juici beef patty that was flat. It is always so filled that you are guaranteed to get a mouthful of filling on your first bite, that’s if you can manage to take a full bite because another great thing about Juici patties is they are always hot! Additionally Juici beef carries a variety of fillings including beef, cheese, chicken, ackee and saltfish, vegetable, soy and shrimp.
Here is a little history about this company: Jukie Chin established Juici Patties. When he was 16 years old, he began producing them and selling them in the family's grocery business. In May 1980, the company formally debuted its first eatery.
Juici Patties is the only fast food establishment having franchisees in all 14 parishes of Jamaica and now serves over 50 different dishes on its menu. Along with several young leadership, education, and sports initiatives, the corporation also funds elderly food programs.
2. Devon House Bakery
They are not branded as a patty company like the others and they only have a single location on the entire island. So, if you want one of these patties, you definitely have to visit Devon House, Jamaica to get one and I for one simply refuse to visit Kingston without grabbing one of their patties.
They create what I like to call the uptown patties and it shows not just in their appearance but it reflects in their prices too. They are expensive but worth it.
Appearance wise I love the shape of their patties but find them a bit more difficult to eat. They also have a range of fillings including the crowd's favourite lobster and curry goat. You can read more about Devon House here.
3. Tastee
These patties are not bad, they are actually quite flavourful. However, in my opinion, their patties are just always too thin and the crust too soft. But many others love that about them, so you can try and decide for yourself.
A little history about Tastee: After completing his studies at the William Hood Dunwoody Industrial Institute and the American Institute of Baking in Chicago, Illinois, the chairman of Tastee Limited, Vincent Chang, returned to Jamaica from the United States in 1966 and started the company.
Tastee provides catering services, operates food trucks, and has concessionaire outlets in numerous public institutions. The business awards scholarships to UWI and UTECH students and contributes to a number of causes, organisations, and charities.
4. Mother’s
I must first admit that I have only eaten mothers beef patty a handful of times. It is still great tasting but doesn't quite hit the spot as the others do. They also have a wide variety of fillings and combinations (like BLTC additions to every patty) that I intend to try someday soon, maybe then my opinion will change.
A little history: Mother's Enterprise Ltd. is a Jamaican-owned and -run business. Adrian B. Foreman (chairman), V. Carlysle Hudson (managing director), and Richard Foreman formed it in July 1981. (general manager). The business offers vegetarian choices in addition to more than 350 different patties and combos. Mother's sponsors a range of clubs, sports teams, and kid-related enterprises.
So yes in my opinion the best Jamaican beef patty brand is Juici Beef Patties. But not everyone shares that opinion, watch the video below with the My-Island-Jamaica team and you’ll see what I mean.
