From time to time we lose our keys for either our home, office or, more times than we care to think, our cars.
Do not be alarmed if you find yourself in such a predicament as Jamaica is equipped with many locksmiths who can get the job done.
The cost of having a key cut varies, as a number of variables come into play. Cutting keys from a duplicate is much cheaper that having a key made from scratch.
This is so because the locksmith would have master copies already made which would require very little work to get it to fit the lock.
Also, with a duplicate key the owner can travel directly to the locksmith’s shop which will cut cost.
In the event there is no key and the owner is unable to remove the lock and take it directly to the locksmith, a cost would be assigned, as there will be a charge to come to the location and the work done on spot with a manual key cutting machine.
Hence, a key-cutting job that would normally cost JA$500 (or less) may end up costing as much as JA$6500, depending on the type of lock, kind of key and the distance to get to the location to carry out the job.
Check your neighborhood to ensure that there is a locksmith near you before venturing outside of your zone and spend unnecessarily.
