Book On Marie Atkins (She loved the poor)
by: Eartha Osbourne

Hi Wellesley,

Thank you so much for the insert of Marie Atkins, C.D., J.P. Former Mayor of Kingston & St. Andrew into the "Famous Jamaicans" page.

It is so sad that there are so many Jamaicans who have made positive contributions to Jamaica and it's people and have never received credit and goes unknown to the public.

Mrs. Atkins is one of few politicians in this country that really did something for poor people and the Marie Atkins Shelter for the homeless is living proof, not to mention the Marie Atkins Basic School and Balmagie Day Care Center that she established from her own pocket.

In addition, the Mayor's annual Christmas Dinner for the indigent was started by Mrs. Marie Atkins and continues to date.

There are so much wonderful information about this woman, if you are interested to learn more about her there is a book that was done on her "The City of Kingston, A Review of the Administration of Her Worship Councillor Marie Atkins, CD, JP, Mayor of Kingston, Progress Through Service 1989 - 1996".

This gives full details of her achievements during her tenure as mayor during those periods and there is another one that followed from 1996 to 2003 when she retired in 2003.

JIS should have copies of them. These are books that should be in book stores and libraries as well. She left a wonderful legacy, God bless her soul.

Thank you again and please keep me up to date.

Best regards,
Eartha Osbourne
