History of the JTA

At the first meeting held on April 2, 1964, the documents defining the organization's membership and practices were reviewed and approved, establishing the Jamaica Teachers' Association as a legal entity. At a special meeting held in the auditorium of Excelsior High School on December 14, 1963, the resolutions establishing the Association were approved. Association of Headmasters and Headmistresses, Association of Teachers in Technical Institutions, Association of Teacher Training Staffs, and Association of Assistant Masters and Mistresses were the five teachers associations that had previously existed and were combined to form the Association.

Before plans to unite started to take shape in the late 1950s, the Associations pursued concurrent and distinct goals. Greater impetus for unification was given by Jamaica's achievement of self-government in 1957, the implementation of the free place system, and the draft bill to regulate the educational system. The Joint Executives of Teachers' Associations (JETA) was subsequently established in 1957 by the executives of the five organizations. It was required to voice opinions on issues involving teachers and education. The groups ultimately chose to merge into the Jamaica Teachers' Association, a single teacher's organization, to carry out this purpose.

A committee of elected officers and qualified staff manage the JTA. The Presidents, including the President, President-Elect, and Immediate Past President, are in charge of the elected group. Parish and district associations are represented by the other elected officials. All teachers have the chance to engage in association policy-making and program development at the District Association (DA) level. There are 14 Parish Associations and 76 District Associations. The delegates' Annual Conference sets the Association's policies. The General Council, which meets every three months and represents the Conference, is composed of representatives from District and Parish Associations.

Membership

Following is a breakdown of the membership of the Jamaica Teacher's Association:

  • Full Members - Teachers in current duty in public and private educational institutions/organizations that have been approved by the association, as well as retired teachers, are eligible to join as Full Members.
  • Life Members - Persons who are recognized as life members must pay the annual dues for full membership at the going rate in a single lump sum.
  • Honorary Life Members - The General Council and Conference must bestow Life Membership as a special honour to Full Members who are designated as Honorary Life Members.
  • Honorary Members - Honorary Members must be those who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the Association's goals and objectives and whose contributions to education make them deserving of membership in the Association.
  • Associate Members - Associate Members are individuals who are approved as members under particular conditions concerning dues but who are not eligible to vote or hold office.
  • Student Members - Persons enrolled in courses at teacher preparation programs or other institutions that the Association may authorize are eligible to join as student members.

Benefits

Benefits of membership include assistance with disciplinary issues, legal counsel and representation, job placement assistance, and professional counselling. They offer support in disagreements with the Board of Management, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance, the Accountant General Department, and other governmental or statutorily mandated organizations.

Objectives of the JTA

  1. Teacher Welfare and Advocacy: One of the fundamental objectives of the JTA is to champion the rights and welfare of Jamaican teachers. This includes advocating for fair wages, improved working conditions, and professional development opportunities to ensure that educators can provide the best possible education for their students.

  2. Professional Development: The JTA places a strong emphasis on enhancing the professional development of teachers. Through workshops, conferences, and seminars, the association provides opportunities for educators to improve their teaching skills and stay up-to-date with the latest educational practices and technologies.

  3. Promotion of Educational Excellence: The JTA is committed to fostering a culture of excellence in Jamaican schools. They work closely with the Ministry of Education to implement policies and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in the country.

  4. Community Engagement: The JTA encourages teachers to actively engage with their local communities. Through outreach programs and volunteer efforts, teachers are encouraged to make a positive impact beyond the classroom, helping to create a sense of social responsibility among educators.

  5. Advocacy for Education Reform: The JTA plays a pivotal role in advocating for educational reforms that align with the evolving needs of Jamaican society. They work closely with government bodies and other stakeholders to shape the direction of education in the country.

The Jamaica Teachers' Association continues to be a beacon of hope and progress in the Jamaican education system. They have steadily been  dedicated to teacher welfare, professional development, and educational excellence on our nation's educational landscape. As Jamaica continues to evolve, the JTA remains steadfast in its mission to nurture education excellence and empower both teachers and students to reach their full potential. In doing so, it plays a vital role in shaping the future of Jamaica.
