When preparing for vacation, especially out of the country, you want to know if it is right for you and your family or friends. Youโ€™ve finally narrowed it down to 2 spectacular locations; Jamaica and Hawaii. Which is better?

Well, that is your choice to make, both are beautiful islands so that isnโ€™t a qualifying factor. Weโ€™ve thought about a few other factors to consider when deciding on your next vacation of a lifetime.

Is it cheaper to go to Jamaica or Hawaii?

Jamaica and the Caribbean in general are significantly cheaper than Hawaii. Even if you are from the US, and airfare will most likely be cheaper, Hawaii is known to have only a few all-inclusive resort options on the island. This means you will be going out of pocket for food, activities etc.

On the other hand, Jamaica has many all-inclusive resorts and group packages for many exciting island excursions.

For many all-inclusive resorts most things are already included; access to the fitness centre, land sports, most water sports, top-shelf alcohol, and multiple dining options, you name it. In most cases, you will only pay more if you decide to use the spa.

There are also multiple types of all-inclusive hotels in Jamaica from adults-only to family-friendly options which allows you to customise your accommodation even more.

Which is better for a shorter vacation?

Jamaica, being the smaller of the two islands, means most activities are in closer proximity to each other and you can cover more ground in a day. There is no need to book flights across the island (unless absolutely necessary).

From our most easterly point to Negril, our most westerly point is an average of 5 hours.

Hawaii has multiple must-see spots that are scattered across the cluster of islands which means to truly experience them properly, an extended stay would be best.

But you will also have to consider where you are coming from. If you only have a few days you might not want to spend hours on a flight plus another 1ยฝ travelling to your resort if you are staying in Negril or Ocho Rios for example.

Adventure

Jamaica has many activities to keep you occupied for as long as your vacation is. Sometimes because it is a small island, people may think they will run out of fun adventures, I promise you wonโ€™t.

But since Hawaii is larger, they do have many more areas for each activity. Most activities available in Hawaii are in Jamaica as well. But if you are interested in volcanoes, you will have to make the trip to Hawaii as Jamaica does not have any active volcanoes.

Jamaica has more variety in the type of vacation you would love to have. In Hawaii, it is almost exclusively adventurous hikes through the mountains etc. But while you do have these options in Jamaica, you do have the choice of laying down by the pool with a drink in hand for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. So if you only have time for a quick weekend vacation, it might be more enjoyable in Jamaica.

Beaches

Jamaica has an impressive coastline, with stunning white sand beaches at every turn. Negril, Ocho Rios and, Port Antonio are known for being some of the most spectacular places to frolic in the sand. A little less conventional, black sand beaches are on the rural coastline of St. Elizabeth.

Is Jamaica hotter than Hawaii?

Jamaica is the warmer of the two islands. The average temperature in Jamaica is 32ยฐ C while it is 29.4ยฐ C in Hawaii.

When does it rain in Jamaica?

Jamaicaโ€™s wettest months are during the hurricane season from June 30 to November 1. While Jamaica does not experience hurricanes often, it isnโ€™t uncommon for thunderstorms to occur during these months. October is usually the wettest month of the year in Jamaica.

The rainy season in Hawaii lasts from November to March, the latter being the wettest month of the season.

Does it snow in Hawaii?

Yes, it does, but it should not affect your vacation too much. Snow is only seen on the three largest mountains, Haleakala, Mauna Loa, and Mauna Kea and only at elevations above 10,000 feet.

Jamaica does not experience winter and it never snows even at its highest peak.

Culture

Both countries have vibrant cultures that are very connected to their identity. They are both so different that it is impossible to compare. But if you would love to learn more about the history of the islands, each of them has historical sites, culture tours and museums that will be able to provide an insightful trip.

Cuisine

Again both islands have different cuisines. Hawaii is known for its abundance of fresh fruits and traditional Luau. Hawaiian cuisine is influenced by Polynesian, European, Japanese and American tastes. Hawaiian Kalua Pork, slow-roasted whole pork is a favourite on the island.

Jamaica is heavily influenced by our Asian, African, Taino and European ancestors, which creates unique fusion dishes that are distinctly Jamaican. Ackee and Saltfish, Oxtail, Jerk Pork ( or Chicken) and Curried Goat are just a few of the many dishes you absolutely must try while on vacation.

Entertainment

Jamaica is the better option for entertainment. There are Reggae and Dancehall parties that can last until sunrise the next day or you can visit a smooth Jazz bar instead. Sports are also a big part of Jamaican culture so if you happen to visit during cricket, track and field or football season be sure to check out the local games as well.

Whichever destination you decide on, will be a vacation of a lifetime. But if you decide on Jamaica, here is a little more information to get you excited about your trip.
