There is nothing quite like some refreshing, all-natural Jamaican Juice. One of my favourites since childhood, especially during the unrelenting summer, is our Jamaican Passion Fruit drink.

The variations to passion fruit in Jamaica are nearly countless; it is in the hundreds! But, the yellow oval ones are the most common. We do eat it as is by simply splitting it open and sucking the pulp from the seeds, however, we mostly use it to make a delicious drink either by itself or combined with other fruits like papaya and guava.

Passion fruit can vary in taste, some are a bit sweeter than others and some can be super sour and tangy. Jamaican men would say, it’s so sour, that it “cuts nature”.

Anyway, before we talk about anything else, let’s get to the recipe for Jamaican passion fruit juice.

Jamaican Passion Fruit Juice Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 20 medium-sized Jamaican passion fruits (approximately 2 cups of puree with seeds and 1 cup without seeds)
  • 4 cups (960mL) water
  • Sugar for sweetening
  • Ice cubes

PROCEDURE

  1. Carefully halve each passion fruit and scoop out the flesh and seeds into a bowl.
  2. Transfer the fruit to a blender and add 2 cups of water. Pulse at a low setting, ensuring the seeds remain intact.
  3. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher or jar to remove seeds, if desired.
  4. Sweeten with sugar to your liking.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator or add ice cubes.

Alternatives:

The method above, in my opinion, is much easier, but traditionally we would scoop out the insides of the passion fruit, add water and squeeze the seeds with our hands to get off the pulp. Afterwards, we would strain using a cloth mesh strainer or a clean cotton cloth. Maybe, try both methods and see which one you prefer.

Now that your passion fruit juice is chilling in the fridge, these are the health benefits you can anticipate when you decide to have a glass (or two).

What does passion fruit do to your body?

In addition to having an amazing taste, Jamaican passion fruit is incredibly nutritious. Brimming with antioxidants, it helps to improve blood flow—especially to the brain and nervous system. Its strong anti-inflammatory qualities also fight cellular stress, which may reduce the chance of developing conditions like Alzheimer's and heart disease.

Passion Fruit has a very high dietary fibre content, offers a balanced intestinal environment and even helps to prevent constipation. If you have been paying attention to nutrition and diet, you know how important fibre is. According to the American Heart Association, fibre is essential for regulating cholesterol and promoting heart health.

Our passion fruit is also a great choice if you are watching your blood sugar levels because of its low glycemic index. According to some studies, substances in the passion fruit’s seeds may improve insulin sensitivity, which may lead to lowering the risk of diabetes and other linked illnesses.

Passion Fruit is also quite high in vitamin C, which we know is important to strengthen the immune system and help the body fight infections. Additionally, the potassium-rich composition in passion fruit helps to maintain ideal blood pressure levels, while the magnesium content helps to regulate anxiety and reduce stress.

With all those amazing benefits, I will include it in my diet more often. Beyond the fruits' nutritional advantages, Jamaican passion fruit is versatile in the kitchen. Its flavour enhances both sweet and savoury foods and it can be eaten raw, pulped, or made into a pleasant juice.

While it may be a gamble whether you pick up a sweet or sour passion fruit, what you can be certain of is that either way, it will taste great and make you a refreshing drink. Add to that all the amazing health benefits and now you have endless reasons to add this fruit to your grocery list.
